Synopsis

From 1946 to 1961, some Goans fought for the independence of their motherland. There were peaceful movements, the famous “Satyagrahas”, and revolutionary groups like Azad Gomantak Dal. Leading the Portuguese government, Salazar was not willing to decolonize, following the example of other western countries. For him to leave the colonies was out of the question. Portuguese authorities in Goa, namely the famous policeman Agente Casimiro Monteiro, we acting in such a violent way that instead of silencing the revolutionaries, were turning international public opinion against Portugal. Contacto Goa interviewed some of the freedom fighters who fought for the liberation of Goa and revisited the 15 years of struggle which lasted until 18 December 1961, the day Indian army entered Goa.
