Kantar Goa

50 min | 2024

Director | Nalini Elvino de Sousa

Synopsis

From the beginning of the 20th century to today, the cantaram, deemed the side-show of tiatr, portrays the essence of Goa. This film argues that this side-show has, in fact, been the main show, capable of transcending the stage, reaching people’s homes through records, airing on the radio, and expanding further through social media. This documentary explores the roadmap forged by these Konkani songs, especially the works of C. Alvares, Remmie Colaso and Jacinto Vaz in which the research was based. How the cantaram of these artists and of their peers went from the stage to social media and their enduring importance today.

what are people saying

The Cantaram in the Tiatr as well as those broadcast by the radio station of Panjim were the livewire of our culture. Just imagine a number of artists from poor background have cut an album with big recording companies like the Gramophone Company of India, His Master's Voice, EMI, and Decca. Good old days,Radio Ceylon also played one Cantar. Listening to these, kept us upbeat with our rich culture. One time, AIR Panjim had a huge collection in their archives. But now with your good work, perhaps you could be the beacon of our rich culture.
